In southern Hyogo Prefecture, between Kobe and Osaka, the old JR Fukuchiyama Line has emerged as a popular hiking trail for adventurous locals. The abandoned railway meanders along the beautiful Mukogawa Gorge (武庫川渓谷), and this fascinating hike offers picturesque views of the gorge, a chance to walk through train tunnels, and even a refreshing hot spring at the end. It is about 6 km, and takes between 2-3 hours to complete. The hike is pretty low-key and fun for all ages, so put on a sturdy pair of shoes and don’t forget to bring a good flashlight (or a headlamp) for those tunnels!

You can access the hike by train from Osaka station easily. Just take the JR Fukuchiyama Line bound for Shin-sanda (新三田) and get off at Namaze (生瀬) station. If you take a local train, it takes about 40 minutes. For a faster trip, take a rapid train to either Kawanishi-Ikeda (川西池田) or Takarazuka (宝塚), and change to the local train to start your hike at Namaze (生瀬) station.

From Namaze Station it’s a twenty minute walk to the trailhead. Head down the main road, keeping the Co-Op Mini supermarket on your left. Go through the overpass to the highway junction and take a left at the bridge with red railing (don’t cross the bridge!). Keep on the main road until you pass a large toll road overpass, then turn left on a paved path leading down to the river with a series of switchbacks. At the end of it, the trailhead will begin. It can be a bit confusing, so here’s a map to help you find it!
