Sponsored by Sado City

Although small, Sado island has various kinds of landscapes to be seen. Most recently I had the chance to explore the fishing village of Shukunegi on the side of Ogi. Shukunegi offers a special type of authenticity, with its wooden houses, narrow alleys, and canals.

Shukunegi is a village located on the coast of Ogi. It developed throughout the 17th century because of its harbor. Shukunegi is characterized by narrow alleys and over one hundred houses covered with boards taken from old boats. The village is very beautiful, and has been declared as a National Important Preservation Area for Traditional Buildings and Architecture. We strolled along a canal that crosses the entire village. Shukunegi is a real gem, and really looks like a museum because it is so authentic and well preserved. As you wander, you will come across the Sankakuya house, the post office which was established in 1921, the Shoukoji temple, and the Kanekoya residence … At the entrance of the village, you can get a small map to make sure you hit all of these wonders during your walk.

Shukunegi, a Charming Fishing Village
