But several cities in the region are also worth visiting if you have a little more time after getting some fresh water in the local onsen such as <a href=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/best-hot-springs-beppu-japan\/\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>Beppu<\/strong> <\/a>or <strong>Yufuin<\/strong>. Thus the small town of <strong>Kitsuki (\u6775\u7bc9)<\/strong> on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/oita-rokugo-manzan-kunisaki-peninsula\/\" class=\"ek-link\">Kunisaki Peninsula<\/a><\/strong> which is located only 25 kilometers from Beppu, offers a pleasant historical atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33039\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kitsuki-1-281x500.jpg\" alt=\"Kitsuki Castle: The Smallest Castle in Japan\" class=\"wp-image-33039\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to <strong>the well-preserved quarter of samurai houses<\/strong>, one can visit <strong>Kitsuki Castle (\u6775 \u7bc9\u57ce &#8211; Kitsuki-j\u00f4)<\/strong>, the smallest castle in Japan, which stands at the top of a thirty-meter plateau overlooking Morie Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33040\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/kitsuki2-500x281.jpg\" alt=\"Kitsuki castle, the smallest castle in Oita prefecture, Japan.\" class=\"wp-image-33040\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many Japanese strongholds, it has suffered many vicissitudes throughout its history. It was first founded in 1394 by the lord (or \u5927\u540d, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daimyo\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"daimy\u00f4 (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">daimy\u00f4<\/a>) Kitsuki Yorinao. One of the nicknames for this castle is <strong>&#8220;the castle of the cow on the stomach&#8221;<\/strong> because its shape and location in the surrounding landscape would evoke the silhouette of a cow lying on its stomach. It is also called Katsuyamaj\u00f4,<strong> &#8220;the castle of victory&#8221;<\/strong>, in memory of&nbsp;a failed siege fomented by an enemy clan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kitsuki clan then reigned here for fourteen generations until the end of the sixteenth century, before the castle changed hands several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1596-1597, the main castle (\u5929 \u5b88 \u95a3, tenshukaku) suffered irreparable damage, following an earthquake and a big storm. The estate administration was moved to the buildings below the castle. The tenshukaku, central and main element of the fortress, served as home to the lord, a place of refuge in case of attack and an observation point. This tower with seven floors turned to be a symbol of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kitsuki, the current three-story concrete building dates back to 1970. Most of the Japanese castles have been rebuilt, in some cases following the original techniques and materials (dressed stone seating, plastered wooden walls to protect fire, roof tiles glazed). Municipal buses or taxis then make it possible to quickly reach the city center. <strong>By car<\/strong>, exit the highway at Kitsuki IC.
