Good,\u00a0I admit it, unlike most people who have been to or lived in Japan I don\u2019t like most Japanese food. It was\u00a0a constant struggle for me at times as I disliked the vast majority of food in Japan. Yes, I\u2019d be that guy at\u00a0the bar (or restaurant) with friends desperately looking for something I enjoyed to eat on the menu.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5547 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4186-650x488.jpg\" alt=\"Hakata ramen\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4186-650x488.jpg 650w, https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4186-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4186.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm, ok potato fries, gyoza, ummm yeah that\u2019s all for me. Oh we are going to a sushi bar after work?\u00a0Ummm I might not be able to make it. Don\u2019t get me wrong it\u2019s not that I am a picky eater as I will try\u00a0any new food once (e.g. balut, durian\u2026etc) but I was just not a fan of a lot of Japanese food. \u00a0That being said one food I enjoyed eating was ramen! Yes, even someone like me who rejects most\u00a0Japanese food can find common ground and enjoy a nice bowl of ramen. Not that instant ramen some\u00a0of us ate in college or during a stretch of unemployment but actual real ramen! You know, the kind you\u00a0can purchase from an eating establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you are thinking why take my food advice based on the above? Well, I can only hope to\u00a0convince you by saying if someone like me can enjoy certain types of ramen then most people should\u00a0also enjoy it. Perhaps that is a weak argument but hopefully you are still intrigued to find out more. So\u00a0without further ado here is one type of ramen I enjoy:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5546 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4185-650x488.jpg\" alt=\"Hakata ramen\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4185-650x488.jpg 650w, https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4185-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/100_4185.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I already ate half of the bowl before realising I should take a photo of it!\u00a0Yes, that is Hakata ramen (also known as tonkotsu ramen). Hakata ramen is a rich flavoured soup that\u00a0has a pork base. Toppings include a slice of roasted pork, chopped green onions, pepper, pickled ginger\u00a0and sesame. Yes, you could add other toppings like an egg but I prefer the toppings I listed and refuse\u00a0to taint my ramen with an egg.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5548 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SAM_0042-650x488.jpg\" alt=\"Hakata ramen\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SAM_0042-650x488.jpg 650w, https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SAM_0042-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/SAM_0042.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned the broth is rich and is very porky (ok that\u2019s probably not a word) flavoured. Some of you\u00a0might not be able to have a lot of the broth at once which is fine. I\u2019ve known people to water it down\u00a0with water but not sure if that is breaking some unwritten ramen rule so do so at your own peril. Either\u00a0way moderation is OK and after a while you will find the broth slightly addictive.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the noodles? I am glad you asked as the noodles are firm but don\u2019t let them soak in the\u00a0broth too long as they will become soft and mushy (nobody likes mushy noodles!). Most places will give\u00a0you a free refill on the noodles so it\u2019s ok to wolf down the noodles and not worry about having no\u00a0noodles left at the end.\u00a0In fact the prices for the most part are reasonable and I paid anywhere from 500 to 700 yen for a bowl\u00a0(depending on the eating venue). Spend the remaining money from the 1000 yen on a nice cold beer\u00a0or\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Crispy gyoza is a great side to a bowl of ramen!<\/p>\n<p>Gyoza! What did you think I was going to say? Sushi?<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, I know there are lots of types of ramen\u00a0out there and variations on Hakata ramen as well.
