I<strong>n Kannawa, the effect is almost unbelievable!<\/strong> The district was built on an active hot springs area. Kannawa <strong>was a dangerous place <\/strong>because the hot water burst from the ground and if someone was careless, they could easily be burned to death by scalding steam or water. It was impressive seeing the big cloud of steam emerging from a hole in the ground. <strong>The water here is so hot that it is impossible to use it as an <em>onsen<\/em>!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Onsen\u2026for the feet!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have heard about <em>onsen<\/em> (natural Japanese &#8220;pool&#8221; with hot springs), but,&#8230; <strong>What about foot <em>onsen<\/em>?<\/strong> In Beppu and some other areas of Japan you can find these small public spaces called <em><strong>ashiyu<\/strong><\/em> (\u8db3\u6e6f &#8211; foot bath). <strong>It is nice to use it to relax your feet with very hot water. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/04231252\/beppu39-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Foot onsen in the Sea's Hell\" data-id=\"66483\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/04231252\/beppu39.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/voyapon.com\/beppu39\/\" class=\"wp-image-66483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/04231252\/beppu39-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/04231252\/beppu39-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/04231252\/beppu39.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\">Ashiyu &#8211; Feet Onsen<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ashiyu<\/em> are usually <strong>free access<\/strong> and you just have to bring a towel to dry your feet. You don&#8217;t have to be naked, of course, which is a good way to experience Japanese hot springs without taking off your clothes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During my Beppu stay, I saw three <em>ashiyu<\/em>: one next to the <strong>Jigokumushi Kobo Kannawa<\/strong>, which was not operating that day. After so many days of walking around,<strong> it helped to refresh my tired feet<\/strong>. But remember: the water is really hot! When I took my feet out, it looked like I was wearing red socks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mushiyu Onsen<\/strong>: Most Famous Onsen in Beppu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;In this <em>onsen<\/em> you can relax in its hot springs. These waters are good for many illnesses such as chronic joint pain, stress, and depression. One of the most famous experiences there are the <strong>steam baths,<\/strong> known as <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link ek-link ek-link ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.city.beppu.oita.jp\/sisetu\/shieionsen\/detail11.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kannawa Steam Bath<\/strong>.<\/a> Consisting of <strong>a sauna inside<\/strong> <strong>a rock cabin with medicinal herbs on the floor, <\/strong>you lie down on the floor and let the steam surround you for 10 minutes.
