For an overseas visitor, it can be a dizzying experience for those unfamiliar with the multitude of facilities dedicated to particular medical specialties, its lack of foreign language support, and expensive out-of-pocket costs (without travelers insurance) to easily navigate on their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on whether you need immediate emergency attention, have a concern you want checking out, or simply need to pick up some medication, there&#8217;s an array of hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies that one can visit to tend to your needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"medical-facility-japan\">Finding A Medical Facility in Japan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you&#8217;ll have to figure out what medical facility you should visit. Unlike many western countries, the Japanese healthcare system has relatively few GPs and family doctors who treat common medical conditions. Rather, <strong>many doctors in Japan are specialists within a particular field of medicine<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you have cold symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, and runny nose, you&#8217;ll likely want to visit a specialist in internal medicine (\u5185\u79d1). For bone fractures and joint pain, a visit will likely take you to a specialist in orthopedic surgery (\u6574\u5f62\u5916\u79d1). If you&#8217;re not sure what specialist you should visit, the JNTO &#8220;<a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnto.go.jp\/emergency\/eng\/mi_guide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">Guide for When You are Feeling Ill<\/a>&#8221; guide has a list of diagnosis and treatment departments that is related to particular symptoms and areas of concern. <strong>The <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnto.go.jp\/emergency\/eng\/mi_guide.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">JNTO website<\/a> also has a list of medical institutions that accept foreign visitors<\/strong> searchable by location, and lists medical services and supported foreign languages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare also <a aria-label=\"has a list of hospitals and clinics (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mhlw.go.jp\/english\/policy\/health-medical\/medical-care\/info_hpspitals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">have a list of hospitals and clinics<\/a> organized by prefecture, and available to overseas visitors and residents alike. Though some of the listed websites have English and other foreign language support, most will require the use of Google translate (or a Japanese-savvy friend) to help translate the content for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hospital-clinic-pharmacy-drugstore-japan\">Emergency Hospitals, Hospitals, Clinics, Pharmacies, and Drugstores<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02132534\/dai_byouin2.png\" alt=\"Hospital illustration\" class=\"wp-image-68155\" style=\"width:375px;height:297px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Japan&#8217;s<strong> emergency hospitals<\/strong> or <em><em>ky\u016bky\u016b<\/em> by\u014din<\/em> (\u6551\u6025\u75c5\u9662) have round-the-clock staff 24 hours a day and are geared towards those who require urgent medical attention. Keep in mind that those without traveler insurance <em>may not<\/em> be able to receive medical attention and be referred to another hospital if so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>general hospital<\/strong> (\u75c5\u9662, <em>by\u014din<\/em>) on the other hand, has hours of operation that vary from region to region. They can be open weekdays from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, closed on Sundays, have varying hours for each medical specialist, or have specific time slots for walk-in patients. Patients with referrals normally get preferential treatment, so if you&#8217;re walking off the street, you may find yourself waiting in long lines before you see a doctor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clinics<\/strong> (\u30af\u30ea\u30cb\u30c3\u30af, <em>kurinikku<\/em>) tend to be smaller than hospitals, though their sizes can vary, and can house one general practitioner to several specialist doctors in-house. They are also commonly set up for residents, meaning that overseas visitors may not be able to access medical attention at a Japanese clinic, so do some research beforehand if you&#8217;re planning on making a visit. Many clinics have a pharmacy attached to the clinic building itself, making it easy to visit a doctor and pick up a prescription all in one go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02132725\/building_medical_pharmacy.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68157\" style=\"width:300px;height:300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02132725\/building_medical_pharmacy.png 400w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02132725\/building_medical_pharmacy-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02132725\/building_medical_pharmacy-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02132725\/building_medical_pharmacy-250x250.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>If there isn&#8217;t a <strong>pharmacy<\/strong> (\u85ac\u5c40,<em> yakkyoku<\/em>) attached to the facility, most hospitals and clinics will have one in its close vicinity. Look for characters featuring this sign: \u51e6\u65b9\u305b\u3093 (<em>shohosen<\/em>),  \u8abf\u5264\u85ac\u5c40 <em>(chouzaiyakkyoku<\/em>) or \u85ac (<em>kusuri<\/em>, medicine) for the nearest prescription pharmacy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>drugstore<\/strong> (\u30c9\u30e9\u30c3\u30b0\u30b9\u30c8\u30a2) is a good place to look for prescription-free medications to deal with general ailments such as allergies, headaches, and cold symptoms. They may also feature the character for medicine \u85ac (<em>kusuri)<\/em> as a prescription pharmacy can. You can usually tell the difference between the two, as drugstores normally don&#8217;t have a prescription pickup counter, and have a wider range of products on sale, such as magazines, snacks, and other miscellaneous items. Business hours vary, though many drugstores in larger centers stay open until 9:00 pm at night. Some of the more ubiquitous drugstores are <strong>Matsumoto Kiyoshi<\/strong> (\u30de\u30c4\u30e2\u30c8\u30ad\u30e8\u30b7), <strong>Daikoku Drug<\/strong> (\u30c0\u30a4\u30b3\u30af\u30c9\u30e9\u30c3\u30af), <strong>cocokarafine<\/strong> (\u30b3\u30b3\u30ab\u30e9\u30d5\u30a1\u30a4\u30f3), and <strong>Don Quijote<\/strong> (\u30c9\u30f3\u30fb\u30ad\u30db\u30fc\u30c6).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"paying-medical-japan\">How to Pay for Medical Services in Japan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How you pay, and how much, for any incurred medical fees will depend largely on whether you are covered by travel insurance or not. <strong>Some insurance coverages have cashless settlement options<\/strong>, so there&#8217;s no need for the hassle at the counter for payment. Check the full extent of your respective coverage details to confirm. If you don&#8217;t have any travelers insurance or have costs that are not fully covered by insurance, you can pay directly at the facility. Many large hospitals offer credit card payments, though some smaller hospitals and many clinics still operate on a cash-only basis, so have some on hand if you are visiting one of these facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"travellers-insurance\">Travellers Insurance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Purchasing some kind of <strong>travellers insurance<\/strong> is a wise decision to avoid the red tape that can often plague Japan&#8217;s healthcare services. Travellers insurance can greatly reduce and even eliminate the hefty costs that come from paying for medical treatment out of pocket, not to mention getting you the care that you need when you need it. Japanese hospitals and clinics don&#8217;t accept foreign health insurance whose coverage doesn&#8217;t include travel in Japan, so even urgent medical attention <em>may<\/em> get you turned away without the right kind of insurance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check with your home country&#8217;s insurance provider to see whether their coverage extends into Japan and for their variety of periods, coverages and additional benefits. If you&#8217;re already in Japan, insurance providers such as Sompo Japan Nipponkoa offer 10, 20 or 30 days of coverage. Almost all options will have a list of partnered hospitals and clinics you can visit, and offer interpretation services between you and your doctor over the phone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"medical-info-sheets\">Personal Medical Information Sheets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A personal <strong>Japanese-to-English medical information sheet<\/strong> is helpful if you encounter language barriers when speaking to a medical professional. The Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) has a <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnto.go.jp\/emergency\/common\/pdf\/guide_p7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">basic downloadable form<\/a> that you can fill out and includes your personal medical history, medication information, or any allergies you may have. The JNTO&#8217;s<a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnto.go.jp\/emergency\/common\/pdf\/guide_p8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\"> reference guide of symptoms and their severity<\/a> is another useful reference sheet to carry with you, to help describe your symptoms and concerns to doctors more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ambulance-japan-119\">Calling An Ambulance: Dial #119<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find yourself in need of an ambulance (\u6551\u6025\u8eca, <em>ky\u016bky\u016bsha<\/em>), call the <strong>119 emergency number<\/strong>. The 119 number can be made from mobile or payphone free of charge, and there is no additional cost for riding an ambulance. Keep in mind that you won&#8217;t be able to choose which medical facility you are taken to, and you&#8217;ll be responsible for any incurred medical fees at your destined hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02134352\/tsuuhou_119_kyukyu_syoubou.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68176\" style=\"width:450px;height:296px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02134352\/tsuuhou_119_kyukyu_syoubou.png 600w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02134352\/tsuuhou_119_kyukyu_syoubou-500x328.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The 119 number works for either fire or medical emergencies, so you&#8217;ll be asked to state which during your call. To clarify that you&#8217;re calling for a medical emergency, say: &#8220;<em>Ky\u016bky\u016bsha onegai shimasu<\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;Ambulance please&#8221;) or &#8220;medical emergency&#8221; in English. In case of fire, say &#8220;<em>kaji desu&#8221;<\/em> (&#8220;It&#8217;s a fire&#8221;). If you don&#8217;t have a phone or aren&#8217;t near a public payphone, ask someone nearby to call one for you, by asking &#8220;<em>Ky\u016bky\u016bsha o yonde kudasai<\/em>.&#8221; (\u201cPlease call an ambulance.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During your call, you&#8217;ll also be required to provide the following information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is it a medical or fire-related emergency? (&#8220;<em>Ky\u016bky\u016bsha onegai shimasu<\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;Ambulance please&#8221;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your location (address or landmark)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your name and age <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your contact details on how to reach you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Try and answer the questions slowly and clearly. If you don&#8217;t speak Japanese, relay the information slowly and clearly in English. Emergency call centers sometimes have English-speaking operators. If you are struggling to communicate or having trouble identifying a location or landmark, ask someone nearby for help. That being said, there are a few instances where you may need to make a report to the police. If you&#8217;re in a car accident, witness a crime, or need to make an urgent report, here&#8217;s what you can do: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"crime-japan\">Report a Crime: Dial #110<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/02134445\/tsuuhou_110_police.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68179\" style=\"width:300px;height:279px\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>To call the police during an urgent incident, a theft, or you witness a violent crime, dial the <strong>110 police number<\/strong> to make a report. The 110 police number is free of charge, and some public phones are even equipped with a dedicated 110 number. The National Police Agency (NPA) have English speakers on staff, so they&#8217;re able to assist you in making a report to an officer in a three-way call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to provide the following information during your call:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your name, address, and contact details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was the incident or accident?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When and where did it happen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information about the criminal (if there is one), their features, direction they took<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The NPA also advises that people on cell phones remain in place and stay on the line until an officer has reached you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"non-urgent\">Report a Non-Urgent Crime: Dial #9110<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid tying up the 110 police number with non-urgent matters, the <strong>9110 phone number <\/strong>was created to consult on non-urgent matters, such as delinquency, abuse, stalking, and fraudulent trading. Like other natural disasters, the risk level of an eruption is ranked from 1 to 5 \u2013 5 being the most dangerous. <strong>If you&#8217;re near a volcanic eruption,<\/strong> protect your head of any falling debris as you move away, and cover your mouth with a towel or cloth to preventing inhaling volcanic ash or gas. They are essentially the same as hurricanes which form in the Atlantic Ocean while typhoons form in the Pacific. Many typhoons that reach Japan are relatively small with little damage left behind, but each one should be taken seriously and approached with caution. Be diligent by moderating or canceling your outdoor activities accordingly, especially because the exact path of a typhoon can change quickly and without warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best place to be in a typhoon is inside a solidly built structure away from streams or rivers that might flood in heavy rains.
