The height of some buildings needs to be seen from up high to be fully appreciated, as they stretch upwards towards the sky. Some skyscrapers offer viewing-decks on their highest floors and give the public a unique opportunity to get panoramic views of the city. Here is our selection of the top<\/strong> 4 free observation decks<\/strong> that are great for their fantastic views of Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n
Situated in the district of Shinjuku<\/a><\/strong> (\u65b0\u5bbf), the two towers of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building<\/a> (\u6771\u4eac\u90fd\u5e81\u820e, T\u014dky\u014d-to Ch\u014dsha<\/em>) each have observation decks on the 45th floor. At a height of 202 metres<\/strong>, they offer stunning views across the city from several different angles<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n
Access to both decks is free of charge<\/strong>. If you are lucky enough, you may even see Mount Fuji<\/a><\/strong> on a clear day! You will find souvenir shops in both towers and there is also a restaurant in the north tower with breathtaking panoramic views, particularly at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Access<\/strong>: From Shinjuku Station<\/strong> (\u65b0\u5bbf\u99c5), one of the main transport hubs of central Tokyo and situated on many subway lines, follow signs for the Odakyu Line<\/strong> exits and Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. There is a covered, underground walkway which will take you directly into the buildings<\/strong>. Allow around 10 to 15 minutes to walk<\/strong> from Shinjuku station to the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Situated next to Tokyo Dome, Bunkyo City Hall <\/a>(\u6587\u4eac\u30b7\u30d3\u30c3\u30af\u30bb\u30f3\u30bf\u30fc<\/strong>, Bunky\u014d Shibikku Sentaa<\/em>)<\/a> has a free observation deck on the 25th floor<\/strong> at a height of 130 metres. The slanted windows allow you to look down towards the surrounding streets below and you can see all the skyscrapers of Shinjuku to the west. <\/p>\n\n\n
The deck has a stunning view of Tokyo Skytree<\/strong> and, on a clear day, you can also see Mount Fuji<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Open every day from 09:00 to 20:30. Closed between 29th of December and 3rd of January as well as the 3rd of Saturday in May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Access<\/strong>: The closest subway station is Kasuga Station<\/strong> (\u6625\u65e5\u99c5) which is on the Toei Subway line<\/strong> and connected to major transport hubs, such as Shinjuku, and takes approximately 13 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Open to the public since 2012, the Asakusa Tourist Information Centre<\/a><\/strong> (\u6d45\u8349\u6587\u5316\u89b3\u5149\u30bb\u30f3\u30bf\u30fc, Asakusa Bunka Kank\u014d Sentaa<\/em>), designed by architect Kengo Kuma<\/strong> (\u9688\u7814\u543e), has a terrace on the 8th floor with panoramic views of the city below. Facing Kaminarimon Gate <\/strong>(\u96f7\u9580), it offers views of the main commercial street leading up to Sens\u014d-ji Temple<\/a><\/strong> (\u6d45\u8349\u5bfa) as well as Tokyo Skytree. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n
The Tourist Information Centre is open every day from 09:00 until 20:00 with the observation deck remaining open until 22:00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Access<\/strong>: The closest subway station is Asakusa Station<\/strong> (\u6d45\u8349\u99c5) which is on the Ginza, Toei and Asakusa lines<\/strong>. From Shibuya Station (\u6e0b\u8c37\u99c5), it takes 33 minutes on the Ginza line to Asakusa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Located in the Ginza<\/strong> (\u9280\u5ea7) district of Tokyo, the office building of Dentsu has an observation deck on the 46th floor<\/strong><\/a> (\u30ab\u30ec\u30c3\u30bf\u6c50\u7559\u96fb\u901a\u672c\u793e\u30d3\u30eb \u5c55\u671b\u30ed\u30d3\u30fc, Caretta Shiodome Dents\u016b Honsha Biru Denb\u014d Lobby<\/em>) which is accessible by an elevator. From the observation deck, you get a unique view of various points of interest in Tokyo Bay<\/strong> (\u6771\u4eac\u6e7e, Tokyo wan<\/em>), such as Tsukiji Fish Market<\/strong> (\u7bc9\u5730\u5e02\u5834, Tsukiji shij\u014d<\/em><\/em>), Hama-Rikyu Gardens<\/strong> (\u6d5c\u96e2\u5bae\u6069\u8cdc\u5ead\u5712, Hama-riky\u016b Onshi Teien<\/em>), the Rainbow Bridge <\/strong>(\u30ec\u30a4\u30f3\u30dc\u30fc\u30d6\u30ea\u30c3\u30b8) and Odaiba <\/strong>(\u304a\u53f0\u5834). Access<\/strong>: Shimbashi Station<\/strong> (\u65b0\u6a4b\u99c5) is just a short walk from Dentsu Tower and conveniently located on Tokyo’s loop line, the Yamanote Line<\/strong>. It is just a short 4-minute journey from Tokyo Station to Shimbashi on the Yamanote Line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
