As I debarked on a floating dock moored by a giant rusting chain, the first thing I heard was the loud creaking moan of the swaying footbridge to the shore. And the first thing that came to mind, as I walked toward the ruins of its early 20th-century copper refinery, was post-industrial vintage cool. While it may be much smaller than the primary insular venues of Naoshima and Teshima, <strong>Inujima\u2019s artful, ecological reappropriation of its dark industrial history<\/strong> dwarfs any other single art installation on the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21182232\/inujima-bricks.jpg\" alt=\"Slag bricks of refinery ruins\" class=\"wp-image-73738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21182232\/inujima-bricks.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21182232\/inujima-bricks-500x291.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Remains of Inujima\u2019s abandoned copper refinery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From 1909 to 1919, Inujima thrived on an industry of copper smelting<\/strong>, invariably polluting the environment. After the price of copper dropped, the plant was eventually abandoned, the island\u2019s population dwindled, and the remaining inhabitants resumed their rural ways. Today, <strong>Inujima counts about 30 aging residents, while the island has undergone an artistic revival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inujima Seirensho Art Museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2008, the refinery ruins have been converted into the <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" class=\"ek-link ek-link ek-link ek-link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/benesse-artsite.jp\/en\/art\/seirensho.html\" target=\"_blank\">Inujima Seirensho Art Museum<\/a><\/strong> (\u72ac\u5cf6\u7cbe\u932c\u6240\u7f8e\u8853\u9928): an art site that not only hosts permanent art installations but also regulates temperature through its chimney, leverages natural light with prisms and mirrors, composts human waste to fertilize an orange grove, and <strong>reuses some black slag bricks <em>(karami renga)<\/em> from its original structure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105530\/Inujima_01.jpg\" alt=\"Inujima Seirensho Art Museum\" class=\"wp-image-74457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105530\/Inujima_01.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105530\/Inujima_01-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Inujima Seirensho Art Museum | Photo: Daici Ano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Inujima\u2019s artfully reclaimed industrial heritage, we have to thank the <strong>artist Yukinori Yanagi<\/strong>, who first worked out a plan for the entire island to be developed as an art site in 1995, and the architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, who successfully transformed the ruins by \u201cusing what exists to create what is to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the museum, Yanagi installed <strong>artworks inspired by the life and work of Japanese writer Yukio Mishima<\/strong>, who was a vocal critic of Japan\u2019s modernization. Making his message even more visceral, the installations feature various parts of a dismantled house that previously belonged to Mishima himself. Other than symbolic lightbulbs of the artwork, the <strong>museum uses no electric lighting nor air-conditioning \u2013&nbsp;reflecting light and channeling heat through geothermal energy and solar-powered air circulation, moving it up the chimney<\/strong>. It\u2019s almost as fascinating to feel the changes in room temperature as it is to watch the suspended windows and doors swaying in the breeze under the greenhouse at the foot of the chimney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"609\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21180607\/inujima-chimneys.jpg\" alt=\"Chimneys on a green hill\" class=\"wp-image-73734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21180607\/inujima-chimneys.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21180607\/inujima-chimneys-500x297.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Eroding chimneys tower over Inujima\u2019s wild vegetation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside, <strong>silhouettes of crumbling copper smokestacks jutting above the horizon<\/strong> still dominate the landscape, even as they are reclaimed by nature. And it\u2019s hard not to admire the undisturbed ruins of carefully laid brick walls, with their dark tone and burnt texture, even knowing that the black slag resulted from the dirty process of extracting copper from ore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Inujima is also known for brighter stones: <strong>Inujima Mikageishi<\/strong> <strong>(\u72ac\u5cf6\u5fa1\u5f71\u77f3) is fine-quality granite<\/strong> that is measured and sold, most notably for the reconstruction of castles and shrines (such as Okayama Castle, Osaka Castle, and Kamakura Hachimangu\u2019s Otorii). I got a closer look at these large, light-colored stones lining the east coast of the island as I walked back from the museum\u2019s ticket center toward the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21184111\/inujima-mikageishi.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21184111\/inujima-mikageishi.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21184111\/inujima-mikageishi-500x257.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Inujima Mikageishi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inujima \u201cArt House Project\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the island is so small, I could easily visit every art site, including all the installations of <strong><a class=\"ek-link ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/benesse-artsite.jp\/en\/art\/inujima-arthouse.html\">Inujima \u201cArt House Project,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> (\u72ac\u5cf6\u300c\u5bb6\u30d7\u30ed\u30b8\u30a7\u30af\u30c8\u300d) and still have time for a drink at the caf\u00e9 in one afternoon. Integrated into residential areas of the island, the lettered Art Houses are also part of town restoration, <strong>reusing roof tiles and old structural material from private houses<\/strong>. The artworks use materials such as local stones or wood, transparent acrylic glass, mirrors, or aluminum that reflect their surroundings to create new perspectives of familiar views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21180604\/inujima-chat.jpg\" alt=\"Cat sitting on bricks\" class=\"wp-image-73733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21180604\/inujima-chat.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/21180604\/inujima-chat-500x312.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inujima Life Garden<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2016, <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/benesse-artsite.jp\/en\/art\/lifegarden.html\" target=\"_blank\">Inujima Life Garden<\/a> (\u72ac\u5cf6 \u304f\u3089\u3057\u306e\u690d\u7269\u5712) is a collaborative botanical garden spread over 4,500 square meters of land centered around a long-abandoned greenhouse<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105519\/Inujima_03.jpg\" alt=\"Garden Life at Inujima Life Garden\" class=\"wp-image-74455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105519\/Inujima_03.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105519\/Inujima_03-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/s3.voyapon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/07105519\/Inujima_03-900x600.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Inujima Life Garden | Photo: Yoshikazu Inoue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A water purification system pumps water from a well, filters through plants, and stores it in a tank. The site has a composting toilet, while chickens eat weeds and also produce fertilizer for the soil. Community workshops and activities are more frequent in spring and summer, where people work together to cultivate and maintain the garden. <strong>Life Garden is an ongoing project for people to learn to be self-sufficient and a practical model for imagining future lifestyles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inujima Seirensho Art Museum, Inujima \u201cArt House Project\u201d and Inujima Life Garden are open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Tuesdays (March 1 &#8211; November 30) and Tuesdays to Thursdays (December 1 to the last day of February), with exceptions for national holidays. *The opening of the site will be changed from December 2020. The campsite includes numbered platforms (deck sites), showers, toilets, and direct access to a crescent-shaped swimming beach. From Hoden Port (\u5b9d\u4f1d\u6e2f), a small boat will take you on a 10-minute journey to the island for \u00a5300.
