As it is located between so many plates, their displacement provokes a high chance of earthquakes. To give you an idea, the average number of earthquakes between 2001 and 2010 was roughly&nbsp;<strong>4,800 tremors per year<\/strong>. Luckily, most of them are mild. Even so, depending on the plates&#8217; position and their movement, they can cause significant catastrophes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in 1923, the&nbsp;<strong>Great Kanto earthquake<\/strong>&nbsp;had a magnitude of 7.9, with an estimated death toll of more than 100,000. In 1995, there was the&nbsp;<strong>Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in Kobe<\/strong>&nbsp;with a magnitude of 6.9.
