When visiting Kamakura as well as its coastal neighbour Enoshima, there’s one dish that’s an absolute must-try. Shirasudon is a ricebowl topped with raw or cooked juvenile fishes (known as whitebait or shirasu). This tender delicacy has a slightly salty flavour; shirasudon can be found throughout the area, but one restaurant in particular draws many keen eaters for its tasty shirasudon as well as other delicious dishes using shirasu: Shirasuya (しらすや).

But it’s these little guys we are here for at the moment!

The table has quite some intrique woodwork.

Some fresh appetizers.

The main course, shirasudon!

Can you also spot the shirasu in this dish?
