Dazaifu, a beautiful city with a deep history and the perfect place to experience old traditions of Japan, is also one of the most popular destinations in Fukuoka.

When you visit Dazaifu you can almost feel as though you have gone back in time. The area has a peaceful atmosphere and features traditional architecture, together with some stunning natural beauty.

Founded in the year 905, Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine is one of Fukuoka Prefectures’ most famous and well respected shrines. The shrine is dedicated to the scholar Suguwara no Michizane, who lived during the Heian Period (794-1185) and is now regarded as the god of learning. The shrine was built on the site of his grave and many students and teachers come to pray for success in their studies at Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine, especially during New Year when they wait up to three hours for a chance to pray.

The grounds around the shrine spread over a wide distance and feature some stunning natural views. There are around 6,000 plum blossom trees, which bloom in late February to mid-March, providing some beautiful views. One of these trees has a story behind it: “Tobiume”. This tree was said to have flown to Dazaifu from Kyoto, to be with Michizane after he was exiled there.

The road leading to the shrine is a great place to sample the local speciality, Umegae Mochi. There are plenty of stalls to buy one of these delicious dumplings to go, or you can just drop by one of the tea houses for a quiet break.
