Wakayama Prefecture is located south of Osaka in the Kansai Region. The prefecture’s best known tourist attraction is Mount Koya (Koyasan), the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism and the best place to experience an overnight stay (shukubo) at a temple. There is also a well developed Hot Spring (Onsen) resort called Shirahama, which also has a beautiful long sand beach. Many hotels are situated around the beach and nightly fireworks are held in summer.
