Nagasaki is a city with a wealth of history and mystery. It has many sightseeing places, mostly built since the Shogun era. One of those places, a romantic garden, located in the southern part of the city, called Glover Garden.
Glover Garden was built in 1863 by Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish merchant. Glover contributed to the modernization of Japan through his Glover trading company. He is famous as the father of Japanese beer, and the Kirin Beer logo shares the famous Moustache of Glover.
Glover Garden is a quiet and relaxing place, a romantic spot far from the haste and rush hour of the city. It offers visitors several old buildings and a beautiful garden outside. There are many interesting old buildings and houses with unique atmospheres which in its own ways are also romantic.
The former Glover House, which is a nationally designated important cultural property, is the city’s oldest Western-style wooden house. It is a unique building with a garden in front of the house, with tulips blooming there in spring. In addition to the many old, Western-style buildings, their furniture and concept are also unique and mysterious, like something out of a scene from a movie.
Inside this romantic garden, you can enjoy yourself in a cafeteria that has a superb view of Nagasaki port. Glover Garden is open daily (depending on the season) from 8:00 to 18:00. The entrance fee is 610 yen for adults and 300 yen for high school students. Groups of more than 15 people will receive a cheaper entrance fee.
You can feel the atmosphere of Japan from days past, then enjoy the view of Nagasaki port. This is a must-see for people who want to feel the romantic atmosphere and learn the history of the relations between Japan and Western culture.
To access Glover Garden from Nagasaki Station, a 20-minute taxi ride costs around 1,000 yen, or take the city tram to experience the warm weather and friendly people of Nagasaki. To get there by tram, take Line 1 from Nagasaki Eki Mae to Tsukimachi, transfer to line 5 (Ishi-bashi), then take the tram to Oura Tenshudoshita or Ishibashi. The tram trip takes about 15 minutes, followed by an eight-minute walk to Glover Garden.
